Hee allemaal!

Hi everyone!
If I’m very honest, I actually don’t read that many books in which different forms of diversity come along. Despite the fact that when I read a book with diversity, I normally enjoy it, I prefer m/f relationships more. Still, I’m trying out more and more different things, like the Heartstopper graphic noveles, which I really enjoyed! So when I was asked to review this book, I was eager to try this story as well.

Something lurks underneath the surface of the Hog Creek river.
Welcome to dusty and washed-out Hog Creek, where nothing ever happens. Until Grayson accidentally sees a horrifying creature disappear into the local river. He ignores the incident, but then people start to go missing…
EverAfterPrint are known fort heir books full of diversity and stories supported by illustrations. Likewise in Something Afwul. The cover is dark, mysterious and contains not that many colors. In this way, the atmosphere that prevails in Hog Creak is immediately there and the tone is set for the reader. Then the main character also tells us about it, making everything come more alive than only through the cover.
The chapters are short, each time preceded by an illustration of a certain detail or a place that occurs in the chapters. Also, each chapter has a title, which fits the content of the chapter in the same way as the illustration. The story seems tob e written from one perspective at first, but after a few chapters you are taken by surprise and this change happens every now and then. This ensures that the story becomes more of a whole and brings in just that little bit more depth.
As of the storyline, on the one hand it is surprising and accomodating while on the other hand it’s quite preditable and somewhat incomplete. The writingstyle is very pleasant and easy to follow. There are occasional puns and the dialogues contain some humor every now and then. Because this book is labeled as ‘queer’, it was of course predictable in which direction it would go in terms of attractions of the main character. Yet the author also added a surprising element to it: character Shelby. I didn’t expect the friendship that develops between Grayson and Shelby in this story, but it was a welcome extra.
As for the ‘somewhat incomplete’ thing I mentioned above, it has to do with the unfinished business in the story. Such as the relationship between Grayson and his father, the work Grayson does to earn extra money and the missing persons. The fact that not all of these topics are completed in the story made me feel like I was missing something in it. On the other hand, it did add tot he mysterious atmosphere in it…
But while these things seemed unfinished, other elements in the story were not. Like Grayson’s choice about college and his feelings for Aaron. This shows the courage of the author, it ensures that you as a reader learn to understand exactly what the need of the story was about. Because despite the fact that the supernatural elements seemed to play a major role, it turns out Grayson’s personal development was even more important. There was a certain convergence of circumstances that made this story this story.
All in all, Something Awful is an intriguing, dark and yet recognizable story about a boy in search of his own identity.
