Hee iedereen!

Hi everyone!
Even though I read a lot of YA Fantasy, sometimes I do like to read a thriller or romance book in the YA genre. I didn’t quite like the Three Dark Crowns series, but I wanted to give the new book from this author a chance. I think it’s a standalone and the description sounded pretty interesting!

Summer 1958—a string of murders plagues the Midwest. The victims are found in their cars and in their homes—even in their beds—their bodies drained, but with no blood anywhere.
September 19- the Carlson family is slaughtered in their Minnesota farmhouse, and the case gets its first lead: 15-year-old Marie Catherine Hale is found at the scene. She is covered in blood from head to toe, and at first she’s mistaken for a survivor. But not a drop of the blood is hers.
Michael Jensen, son of the local sheriff, yearns to become a journalist and escape his small-town. He never imagined that the biggest story in the country would fall into his lap, or that he would be pulled into the investigation, when Marie decides that he is the only one she will confess to.
As Marie recounts her version of the story, it falls to Michael to find the truth: What really happened the night that the Carlsons were killed? And how did one girl wind up in the middle of all these bodies?
The story starts a little differently than you might expect. First of all, quite a surprise: the narrative perspective is quite loose. It is more like a story told directly to the reader rather than a sequence of events as in many other books. There are some retrospectives or even previews, small but important events of which the main character already describes what will happen later on in the story to clarify in advance. On the one hand, this works fine, it provides overview and clarity. But on the other hand, it might also take you out of the story. It will be different for each reader.
Furthermore, it was also a surprise that there is much more information about the previous murders than just the conversations that take place between Michael and Marie. It makes the story a little bit more of a report of all the important things that have happened around it than a testimony from Marie.
In fact, the conversations between Michael and Marie are not always that clear and exciting. The most important matters are avoided; Marie prefers not to talk about them. As a result, the story gradually becomes more and more vague and at a certain point you have no idea in which direction the story is going. Still, it certainly brings some sort of tension and excitement. What about the things Marie said are true and what not? It is also clear that a certain chemistry develops between the two of them, but the effect of this could have been more intense and committed than it has become.
In the meantime, Michael also experiences a few things as a teenager. Getting involved in this case has changed his whole life. People look at him for information, he gets involved in police cases that his parents think he is too young for, etc. Students at his school also start to view him differently, especially when it turns out that Michael pleads for Marie to be innocent. Furthermore, the author sometimes insinuates that the actual killer is still around somewhere nearby and that leads to some exciting moments.
As the story slowly comes to a conclusion, plenty of questions remain unanswered. In the last testimony, the murder of the Carlson family does get clarified and it also explains how the author came to this very writing style. The story then ends with a pretty open, exciting but also quite disturbing ending.
