Downworld – Rebecca Phelps (ENG + NL)

Hee allemaal!

Aanbevelingen die op boeken staan zijn soms heel aantrekkelijk maar kunnen soms ook misleidend zijn. Vond jij The Hunger Games echt supertof om te lezen, maar de nieuwe serie die ermee vergeleken werd dus helemaal niks, dan klopt die vergelijking voor jou niet helemaal. Toch kan het je ertoe aanzetten om het boek dat die tekst bevat, op te pakken en te gaan lezen. De aanbevelingen op dit boek ‘voor fans van de Netflix series Stranger Things en Dark’, sprak mij wel heel erg aan. Een van de belangrijkste redenen waarom ik dit boek wilde lezen. Dit boek verscheen vorige week en ik had een e-arc ontvangen van Macmillan.

Op de plek van een voormalig militaire basis gaan de geruchten dat East Township High School de locatie was van experimenten met ruimte en tijd. Jarenlang hebben studenten gefluisterd dat er zich een deuropening in de school bevindt die toegang geeft tot verschillende tijdlijnen en realiteiten: Down World.

Marina O’Connell is nieuw op school en rouwt nog steeds om de onverklaarbare dood van haar broer Robbie. Ze is maar in een ding geïnteresseerd: het verleden achter zich laten. Maar een ontmoeting met de knappe Brady verandert alles. Hun samenkomst leidt naar verrassende ontdekkingen. Down World is echt en het verleden, het heden en de toekomst raken uit balans.

Brady is vastbesloten om Marina te helpen ontdekken wat er echt maar haar broer is gebeurd. Maar wat uit de ene wereld wordt gehaald, moet door iets anders worden vervangen. Zelfs in een rijk met oneindige mogelijkheden gelden regels.

Het verhaal start in het eerste hoofdstuk al vrij mysterieus. De omgeving waar het verhaal zich in afspeelt is over het algemeen wel een bekende plek in de wereld zoals wij die nu kennen, maar er gaat iets anders, iets bovennatuurlijks schuil in het verhaal en dat komt al snel naar voren. In eerste instantie leer je Marina’s personage beter kennen, haar vrienden, familie. Eigenlijk de ‘gewone’ situatie waarin elk 16-jarig meisje zich in principe bevindt terwijl ze naar school gaat tot ze een bijzondere ontdekking doet.

De introductie van de personages verloopt prima, niet te veel diepgang en de auteur richt zich al snel op het mysterieuze aspect door Marina kennis te laten maken met Brady. Hij is onbekend en interessant en het wordt al snel duidelijk dat Marina hem wel knap vindt. Dit is best wel voor de hand liggend en voegt later in het verhaal eigenlijk weinig meer toe, wat op zich wel jammer is, want Brady’s personage is erg interessant. Ondanks dat er niet heel veel personages in het verhaal voor komen, lopen enkele toch een beetje in elkaar over. Dit heeft ook te maken met wat er zich in Down World afspeelt en de bijbehorende ‘regels’.

Vanaf het moment dat Marina kennismaakt met Down World neemt de spanning in het verhaal toe. Welke mogelijkheden zijn er allemaal vrij gekomen? Aan welke regels moet ze zich houden? Hoe zit Down World precies in elkaar en wie zijn de mensen die er in die wereld leven? Als lezer krijg je gaande het verhaal langzaam enkele antwoorden op deze vragen. Maar de belangrijkste vraag is: wat is er met haar broer gebeurd? De parallelle wereld blijft gedurende het hele verhaal behoorlijk mysterieus en na enkele verrassend ontwikkelingen, stapelen de nieuwe vragen zich steeds meer op. Naarmate het eind van het verhaal in zicht komt, voelt het alsof er nog heel veel moet gebeuren, maar daar heeft de auteur een ander idee over gehad.

De mysterieuze sfeer in het verhaal is goed neergezet, maar doordat je als lezer veel vragen hebt, enkele worden beantwoord, maar er vervolgens weer nieuwe vragen ontstaan, werkt het verhaal zichzelf een beetje in een cirkel. De details over hoe de wereld precies werkt, blijven redelijk oppervlakkig en hadden interessanter en dieper uitgewerkt kunnen worden. Aan de andere kant is het ook interessant om gewoon te lezen wat er door bepaalde gebeurtenissen in gang wordt gezet. Daardoor is het verhaal zeker onvoorspelbaar en vernieuwend.

Een mysterieus en beetje ongrijpbaar verhaal dat lezers nieuwsgierig maakt en hen laat verwonderen over de mogelijkheden van een onbekende maar gelimiteerde wereld.

Recommendations on books can be very attractive, but can also be a little misleading sometimes. If you thought The Hunger Games was really cool to read, but the new series that they compared to it, was not quite good? Then that comparison doesn’t seem right for you. Still, it can prompt you to pick up the book containing that text and start reading. The recommendations on this book ‘, for fans of the Netflix series Stranger Things and Dark’ really appealed to me. One of the main reasons I wanted to read this book. It came out at the end of March and I received and e-arc from Macmillan.

As the site of a former military base, there have always been rumors that East Township High School was the site of experiments with space and time. The Down World is real and the past, present, and future are falling out of balance.

Brady is determined to help Marina discover what really happened to her brother. However, what is taken from one world, must be repaid by another. And Marina is about to discover that even a realm of infinite possibilities has rules that must be obeyed.

This story starts off quite mysteriously in the first chapter. The world in which the story takes place is generally a well-known place in the world as we know it today, but there is something different, something supernatural hidden in the story and that thing soon emerges. At first you get to know Marina’s character, her friends and family. Basically the ‘normal’ situation for a 16-year-old girl: going to school. All until she does a great discovery.

The introduction of the characters is fine, not too much dept hand the author quickly focuses the story on the mysterious aspect by introducing Marina to Brady. He is unknown, interesting and mysterious. Nonetheless, Marina thinks he’s quite cute. This last part was pretty obvious and it doesn’t really add much later in the story, which is a shame, because Brady’s character is very interesting. The aspect of love itself isn’t that important to the story though, although the author tried to add it. It feels a little forced and unreal, like it was added to the story because the readers expect it, but it might have been even better without it. Although there are not many characters in the story, it’s a little difficult to keep them all apart in the beginning. This also has to do with the rules in Down World and because it’s a parallel universe. It makes everything a little more complicated, which also keeps the story interesting.

From the moment Marina is introduced to Down World, the pace and the tension rises with every chapter. What’s possible and what’s not? What rules are applied and how exactly does Down World work? Who are the people who live in that world? As a reader you slowly get some answers to these questions. But the most important question is: what happened to Marina’s brother? The parallel world remains quite mysterious throughout the story and after some surprising developments, new questions keep piling up. As the end of the story approaches, it feels like there is still a lot to do, still a lot to figure out, but the author has had a different idea about that.

The mysterious atmosphere is very well portrayed, but because of all the questions you might have as a reader, the story works itself a bit in a circle. Every time you get an answer to a question, a new question rises. How the world exactly works it quite a puzzle and could’ve been more detailed. On the other hand, it is also interesting to just read whatever happens because it’s just the way it works. It makes the story unpredictable and innovative.

A mysterious and somewhat elusive story that triggers your curiosity and makes readers marvel at the possibilities of an unknown but limited world.
