Hee iedereen!

Hi everyone!
Book covers can speek to you or not. The cover of this book did speak to me, just as the title and it’s description. I didn’t need to know the author, because I just wanted to read this book. Thanks to Haper Teen I received and e-arc to read before it’s publication. Even though I postponed reading this book a couple of times, I picked it up before it got published. In this review you read if I was postively suprised or a little dissapointed.

Alyssa Farshot has spent her whole life trying to outrun her family legacy. Her uncle has successfully ruled as emperor for decades. But the last thing Alyssa wants is to follow in his footsteps. Why would she choose to be trapped in a palace when she could be having wild adventures exploring a thousand-and-one planets in her own ship?
But when Alyssa’s uncle becomes gravely ill, his dying wish surprises the entire galaxy. Instead of naming her as his successor, he calls for a crownchase, the first in seven centuries. Representatives from each of the empire’s prime families—including Alyssa—are thrown into a race to find the royal seal. The first to find the seal wins the throne.
Alyssa’s experience as an explorer makes her the favorite to win the crown she never wanted. And though she doesn’t want to be empress, her duty to her uncle compels her to participate in this one last epic adventure. But when the chase turns deadly, it’s clear that more than just the fate of the empire is at stake.
This book has a great smooth and easy to read writing style. How the author has given the main character her own voice, is really great. With a little wordplay and a curse here and there, it makes the character come to life even more. The thoughts of Alyssa that are described regularly, also add a nice dose of humor to it all. Almost the whole book is written from her perspective and her sense of humor also reveals itself in the dialogues. When faced with a particular dilemma, it’s not always entirely clear which choice she will make. You read about her considerations when her thoughts are described, but the actual decision she makes, becomes clear only when she’s made up her mind and goes over into action. This makes the story and Alyssa’s character quite surprising sometimes.
The worldbuilding is also really great. In the beginning you only know that the airships are used to travel from one planet to another. How these planets and it’s inhabitants actually look are not noted yet. The hunt fort he crown, that’s what it’s all about. While Alyssa travels through space and lands on different plantes, that’s when you get a vision of them. The author also put enough effort in how these airships actually work. Alyssa knows alot about those machines, but as a reader you don’t have to know a lot about machines or computers. How these ships function has been written in easily understandable language. It all sounds logica land at the same time you know their technology has evolved much further in comparison with ours.
Even though the whole story is about one thing: the hunt for the throne, there still are enough exciting and action-packed events to keep it interesting. The chapters are quite short and this makes the story easy to read. There are just a few changes of perspectives or flashbacks. It’s not always clear why these flashbacks or changes happen at first. But as the story continues you slowly realise why the author put these extra elements into the story. The ending wasn’t really predictable, because a lot of fantasy-elements can be surprisingly unexpected. At the end you’re probably both satisfied and curious about the sequel.
