DIY Sprayed edges (book painting)

Heb je dat ook wel eens dat je een special edition koopt met sprayed edges maar je de rest van de serie niet met kleur op snee hebt? Nou, dat had ik laatst dus met ‘Strange the Dreamer’ en ‘Muse of Nightmares’. Dus toen vroeg ik me af, kan ik dat niet zelf doen? Sommige mensen vertelden me dat je het ook zelf kon doen, dus keek ik een paar tutorials op youtube. Ik probeerde het eerst op een afgeschreven bibliotheek boek. Daarna nog op twee tweedehands boeken, voordat ik startte met mijn twee extra boeken van ‘Vicious’ en ‘Vengeful’. En weet je wat? Ik vind het eigenlijk wel super leuk en mooi! Ik had niet gedacht dat ik iemand zou zijn die boeken zou gaan verven, aangezien ik ze altijd zo mooi mogelijk wil houden (geen gebroken rug enzo). Maar nu vind ik het eigenlijk wel wat. Ik deelde een paar voorbeelden op social media en kreeg al snel vragen over hoe ik het gedaan had. Dus nu kun je onderstaande stappen volgen om het zelf te proberen. Ik heb ook een video op youtube geplaatst waarin je kunt zien hoe ik het gedaan heb.

Did you ever buy a second or third book in a series, a special edition with sprayed edges, but the other books in the series you have don’t have sprayed edges? Well, I got that recently with ‘Strange the Dreamer’ and ‘Muse of Nightmares’. Then I figured: Could I do it myself? Some people said they’ve done it themselves, so I viewed some tutorials on youtube and started doing it myself. I tried on an old library book and two second-hand books before I started with my two spare copies of ‘Vicious’ and ‘Vengeful’. And you know what, I kinda like it! I never thought I would be someone who would paint on her books. Because I try to keep them unaffected (no broken spine and all). But now I got the hang of it. I shared some samples on social media and people wanted to know how I did it. So here are a few steps to follow if you want to try this yourself. I also made a youtube video with a (sort of) tutorial.

Step 1: Preparations (1)

NL: Om te starten heb je de volgende materialen nodig: acryl verf, (soft) kwast, schilder palet of bakje, oud papier, plakband, schilderstape, onderlegger en een boek.

ENG: To start you need the following items: arcylic paint, (soft) brush, painters palette or tray, leaflets or paper, adhesive tape, painting tape, desk pad and a book.

Step 2: Preparations (2)

NL: Haal eventueel de flap (dust jacket) van het boek. Gebruik oud papier of folders om het boek mee te beschermen. Leg de lange kant onder de kaft en vouw de overgebleven stukken om de kaft heen, alsof je de kaft inpakt. Gebruik een stukje schilderstape om het vast te plakken aan het boek zodat het niet kan verschuiven. Doe dit aan allebei de kanten.

ENG: Take away the dust jacket from the book (if applicable). Use leaflets or paper to protect te book. Place the long side under the cover and fold the left over parts on to the book, like your wrapping it. Use a piece of painters tape to make the paper stick on the book so it won’t move during the painting. Repeat this on the other side.

NL: Laten we de ruggen niet vergeten, waar de bladzijdes ingenaaid zitten. Deze stukjes kun je ook aftapen met een stukje schildertape. Vergeet niet allebei de kanten te doen!

ENG: Let’s not forget about the book spines, the place where the pages come together. These parts you can also tape off with a piece of painters tape. Don’t forget to tape both sides!

Step 3: The color of the paint

NL: Voordat je begint met verven, is het soms nodig om precies de goede kleur verf te krijgen. De kleine tubetjes heb ik bij de Action gehaald en doordat er zo veel verschillende kleuren in zitten, is er best veel mogelijk. Met drie verschillende kleuren verf, heb ik de juiste kleur groen kunnen mengen. Als je net als ik bij dit boek, zelf een kleur moet samenstellen raad ik je aan om zeker genoeg verf te mengen. Als je opnieuw die kleur moet mengen is de kans klein dat het precies hetzelfde eruit komt te zien. Voor dit boek had ik precies genoeg aan de hoeveelheid die je op de foto ziet. Maar je kunt beter wat verf over hebben dan te weinig hebben.

ENG: Before you start the painting, sometimes is necessary to mix some different colors of paint to get the right color. I bought this set of small tubes at a Dutch store called Action. Because I already have so many different colors, I can mix them and make even more colors myself. Eventually I got the right color green. If you, just like me with this book, have to create the color yourself, I recommend you mix enough paint together so you can paint the whole book. If you don’t have enought paint and you have to mix again, it won’t be easy to get the exact same color. For this book I had exactly enough paint as on the picture below. It’s better to have a little spare than to have too little.

Step 4: Lets paint!

NL: Met verven begin ik altijd bij de korte zijdes van het boek. Houd aan beide kanten van de kaft wat druk op de bladzijdes waar je begint met verven. Probeer als je van plek veranderd, je hand ook mee te verplaatsen om de druk mee te laten naar de plek waar je verft. De druk zorgt ervoor dat de verf niet te ver in de pagina’s trekt. Een andere tip hierbij is om een zachte kwast te gebruiken. Deze haartjes schieten dan niet zo snel tussen de bladzijdes. Als je één kant gedaan hebt, kun je een keer snel door het boek bladeren. Dit zorgt ervoor dat de bladzijdes niet zo snel aan elkaar blijven plakken tijdens het drogen. Verf nu ook de andere korte zijde van het boek en vergeet niet om opnieuw door de bladzijdes te bladeren.

ENG: I always start with the short sides of the book. Keep pressure on both sides of the book where you start to paint. Try moving your hand along with the brush once you change the spot where you’re painting. The pressure is necessary to keep the paint from absoring too much in to the pages. I also recommend using a soft brush. The hairs of a soft brush won’t be able to push between the pages. Once you finish one side, flip through the pages real quick. This will help to keep the pages from stucking together while drying. Now paint the other short side of the book and don’t forget to flip through the pages again.

NL: Als je beide korte zijdes hebt gedaan, is het tijd om de lange zijde te gaan verven. Vergeet niet om je hand mee te bewegen met de kwast om wat druk uit te blijven oefenen op de plekken waar je verft. Als je alle drie de zijdes gedaan hebt, laat je het boek 5 tot 10 minuten drogen.

ENG: Once you’re finished with the two short sides, continue to the long side of the book. Keep in mind to move your hand along with the brush to keep some pressure on the pages. After you’ve finished all sides, let the book dry for 5 to 10 minutes.

Step 5: The result…

NL: Als het er naar uit ziet dat alle pagina’s droog zijn, blader dan een paar keer snel door het boek. Ben de eerste keer wel voorzichtig, mochten de pagina’s nog nat zijn. Sommige pagina’s zullen waarschijnlijk nog aan elkaar plakken, maar als je nog een paar keer snel door het boek bladert zullen de meeste pagina’s wel loskomen. Als ze dan nog wat aan elkaar kleven, kun je bladzijde voor bladzijde door het boek bladeren en als je twee bladzijdes tegenkomt die nog aan elkaar zitten, kun je er met je vinger tussendoor schuiven om ze los te krijgen. Mocht je tijdens het bladeren nog plekken tegenkomen die niet zo goed geverfd zijn of een stuk lichter van kleur zijn, kun je er altijd nog een keer overheen verven. Of de witte plekjes bijwerken en het boek opnieuw te laten drogen. Daarna kun het papier eraf halen en van het eindresultaat genieten!

ENG: Once you think the pages are dry, try flipping through the pages again. Be careful the first time, just to be sure the pages are dry. It’s most likely that some of the pages will stick together on some places. But when you flip through them a few times, most of them will get loose. If not, try go through the book, page by page and use your vinger to help if necesarry. If you find a few spots on the pages while your flipping through the book that are still white or a bit more light of color, you can chose to paint over it again, or fill up the white spots and let it dry again. Afterwards you can remove the leaflets or paper and enjoy the end result!
