Hee allemaal!
Een super mooie, verrassend en fijne dag was voor mij maandag 18 mei. Op die dag ontdekte ik dat uitgeverij Titan Books alle drie de delen van de Steel Prince e-comics op Edelweiss had gezet ter aanvraag om te recenseren. Met een uitgebreide onderbouwing waarom ik deze comics heel graag wilde lezen, waaronder het feit dat V.E. Schwab een van mijn favoriete auteurs is en dat de Villains serie mijn favoriete serie is en ik ook ontzettend genoten had van de Shades of Magic serie. Aangezien deze comics een soort prequel voor deze laatste is, was ik natuurlijk razend enthousiast. Ik had het eerste deel al meermaals in mijn winkelmandje gezet om eventueel aan te schaffen, maar het nog niet aangedurfd. Deze kans op Edelweiss kon ik me niet laten ontschieten. En maar liefst één minuut later ontving ik drie mailtjes, met drie goedkeuringen. Dezelfde week begon ik direct in het eerste deel. Vandaag verschijnt het derde deel met de titel The Rebel Army.

De jonge nakomeling in de Maresh stamboom wordt op strikt bevel van zijn vader,
koning Nokil Maresh, naar een gewelddadig en onbeheersbare havenstad aan de Blood Coast van Verose gestuurd om dit wetteloze landschap aan zijn militaire kennis te onderwerpen. Daar ontmoet hij een weerbarstige groep soldaten, een wetteloos landschap en de bedwelmende dodelijke aanwezigheid van de pas teruggekeerde piratenkoningin, Arisa. Maar ook na die strijd blijft Maxim nog een poos langer in Verose en laat zich meesleuren in de Night of Knives en komt daarna tegenover het helse Rebel Army te staan.
Ondanks dat deze geïllustreerde comics als prequel geschreven zijn voor de Shades of Magic serie, is het geen probleem om ze erna pas te lezen. Voor wie genoten heeft van de wereld waarin Kell en Holland hun magie hanteren, is dit een perfecte manier om nog eens terug te kunnen gaan en zich te verliezen in deze magische wereld.
Maxim is natuurlijk een bekende naam na het lezen van de boeken, maar ook als het nog een onbekende naam voor je is, zijn deze comics prima te lezen. Voorafgaand aan het verhaal en de illustraties schetst Schwab een beeld van dit personage en ook enkele andere personages worden kort geïntroduceerd.
Het eerste dat benoemd moet worden zijn de prachtige, grafische en sprekende illustraties die erin verwerkt zijn. De illustrator heeft echt een geweldige manier 
gevonden om de magie die Maresh en andere personages gebruiken tot leven te wekken. De kleuren, de vormen, de bewegingen, alles lijkt te kloppen en de sfeer doet erg denken aan die in ADSOM. De personages zijn interessant en ondanks dat hun verleden en kijk op de wereld niet zo uitgebreid wordt beschreven, wordt met behulp van korte flashbacks toch duidelijk wat hun rol precies inhoudt en hoe sommige personages met elkaar verbonden zijn. Er vindt volop actie plaats en de verhaallijn is niet lastig te volgen. Ook de extra illustraties van de alternatieve covers zorgen ervoor dat de personages nog meer tot leven komen en een eigen gezicht krijgen. Dit hoeft niet voor iedereen te werken, maar hierin wordt nogmaals zichtbaar hoe getalenteerd de illustratoren zijn die hieraan meegewerkt hebben. Het eerste deel eindigt behoorlijk snel en toch ook wel met een open einde. Dit maakt de lezers nieuwsgierig naar wat het vervolg zal brengen.
De mooie illustraties en actievolle scènes gaan door in het tweede deel Night of Knives. De kleuren, de vormen en de momentopnames zijn precies goed op elkaar afgestemd en 
vormen een prachtig geheel. Zeker in dit deel komt er een hoop meer actie aan bod en de magie wordt verder uitgewerkt. Want deze comic bevat een stuk meer magie gebruik dan het eerste deel. Als lezer zie je zelfs voor het eerst een illustratie van een Antari die zijn magie gebruikt. En ondanks dat de beelden stil staan en er geen beweging plaatsvindt, wordt dit door de krachtige illustraties toch tot leven gewekt en lijkt het alsof het zich voor je neus af speelt.
De wereld van Shades of Magic is zo groot een breed dat elke comic wel een apart verhaal kan bevatten, maar om het één geheel te laten blijven is het toch belangrijk om aandacht te besteden en verdieping in de verhalen te brengen. Dat heeft Victoria opnieuw goed gedaan. Door middel van enkele flashbacks leer je ook andere personages beter kennen en lijkt alles nog meer met elkaar verbonden.
Vandaag verschijnt het derde deel uit deze comic reeks. The Rebel Army belicht weer net een andere kant van het verhaal. Doordat sommige scènes zich ook afspelen bij de antagonisten uit dit verhaal wordt de spanning 
goed opgebouwd. Er vindt minder actie plaats dan in het vorige deel, want in dit verhaal wordt meer aandacht besteed aan samenwerking, vertrouwen scheppen en vooral Maxim’s eigenlijk persoonlijke ontwikkeling. Hij moet zijn rol als prins achter zich laten, maar zich tegelijkertijd zo opstellen dat de mensen wel van plan zijn om hem te volgen. Met hier en daar wat hulp komt hij er langzaam maar zeker achter wat hij daarvoor nodig heeft.
Zodra het einde in zicht komt, worden de magie en de actievolle momenten weer prachtig op papier weergeven. Het verhaal komt echt tot leven en het is gemakkelijk om één hele comic zo in een ruk uit te lezen. Daarmee kom ik dan ook bij het enige nadeel van deze graphic novels: ze zijn zo kort! Maar, er zit wel een leuke toevoeging aan het eind van elk deel. Ze bevatten elk namelijk een Q&A met de auteur. Hierdoor krijg je nog wat extra informatie en zeker als je fan bent van de serie of van de auteur is dit extra inkijkje wel interessant.
Deze graphic novels vormen een prachtig geïllustreerde en actievolle prequel voor de Shades of Magic serie. Een must-read voor alle V.E. Schwab fans.

Monday, the 18th of May was a beautiful and surprising day for me. On that day I discovered publisher Titan Books had made all three graphic novels of the Steel Prince available to request on Edelweiss. I requested them with an extensive explanation why I wanted to read these graphic novels so bad, like V.E. Schwab being one of my favorite authors and the Villains series being my favorite series of all time and how I loved the world of the Shades of Magic series. And since these comics are kind of like a prequel tot his series, I just needed to read them. I’ve had the first comic book in my basket a few times on bookdepository and forbidden planet, but never really made the purchase. I couldn’t let this opportunity pass me without trying. Within only a few minutes I received not just one but three emails, with three approvals! The same week I started in the first one and today, on the release date of the third comic book The Rebel Army, I’m sharing my thoughts about them all.

The youthful Maresh is sent to a violent and unmanageable port city on the Blood
There, he encounters an unruly band of soldiers, a lawless landscape, and the intoxicatingly deadly presence of the newly returned pirate queen, Arisa. After this battle, Maxim stays in Verose for a while longer and it doesn’t take long for him to find himself mixed up in the Night of Knives and right in front of the Rebel Army.
Eventhough this illustrated comic is written as a prequel to the Darker Shades of Magic series, it’s no problem to read them afterwards. For those who have enjoyed the world in which Kell and Holland wielded their magic, this is a perfect way to go back and lose yourself in this magical world again.
Maxim is ofcourse a well-known name after reading the books, but even i fit is still an unknown name fort he reader, these comics are easy to read. Before the story starts, Schwab sketches the characters to introduce them. That’s a nice way to get introduced to some of the characters.
The first thing to mention are the beautiful, graphic and expressive illustrations incorporated in this comic book. The illustrator has really found a great way to bring alive the magic Maresh and other characters use. The colors, the shapes, the movements, everything seems to be right and the atmosphere is very similar to the one in ADSOM. The characters are interesting and although their past and view of the world is not described in such detail, short flashbacks still show their role and how some characters are connected to another. There are plenty scenes including some action and the storyline is not hard to follow. The extra illustrations of the alternative covers in between the chapters also ensure that the characters come to life even more and get their own faces. This doesn’t have to work for everyone, but it shows once again how talented the illustrators are that contributed tot his comic. The first part ends quite quickly and also with an open end. It makes the readers curious about what the sequel will bring.
The beautiful illustrations and action-packed scenes continue in the second part Night of Knives. The colors, shapes and snapshots are perfectly matched and together it’s just beautiful art. Especially in this part there is a lot more action and the usages of magic increases. As a reader you even see for the first time an illustration of an Antari using it’s magic. And even though the images are stil land there is no movement, the powerful illustrations bring these moments to life, like it is happening right in front of you.
The world of Shades of Magic is pretty big and broad, each comic can have it’s own little story. But in urge to keep this a series, it’s important to pay some attention to different layers in it. Schwab did a wonderful job keeping the stories together and also interesting and magical. By using some flashbacks you get to know other characters better too and it makes everything fit more perfectly together.
Today the third part of this comic series is released. The Rebel Army hightlights just another side of the story. Because some scenens also take place with the antagonists in the story, the tension rises. There is less action than in the previous part, because in this story, more attention is paid to cooperation, building trust and especially Maxim’s own personal development. He must leave his role as a prince behind, but at the same time be someone that people will follow. With some help here and there, he slowly finds out what he needs for that.
As the ending comes near, the magic and action-filled moments are beautifully displayed on paper again. The story really comes to life and it’s easy to read one whole comic in one sit. This brings me tot he only downside of these graphic novels: they’re too short! The first two have some extra content. There are a few Q&A’s at the end. This provides us with a little more extra information and if you’re a fan of this series, it’s really interesting getting this extra insight.
These graphic novels are a beautifully illustrated, and action-packed prequel to the Shades of Magic trilogie. A must-read for all V.E. Schwab fans.
