Ik moet toegeven, dit jaar zijn er echt een hele hoop boeken met prachtige covers verschenen en er komen er ook nog een paar. Zoals The Court of Miracles, A Song of Wraiths and Ruin, Among the Beasts and Briars, De Beminde, Bone Criers Moon. En zo kan ik er nog wel een paar opnoemen. Dit boek maakt ook deel uit van de mooie covers van 2020. Vandaag vertel ik jullie of de inhoud ook zo mooi was.

Beschrijving: Shady Grove heeft het vermogen van haar vaders om met zijn viool geesten uit het graf te roepen geërfd. Maar ze weet ook dat de melodieën van de viool niets dan problemen en duisternis met zich meebrengen. Wanneer haar broer wordt beschuldigd van moord, kan ze de doden hun geheimen niet laten bewaren. Om zijn naam te zuiveren moet ze de geesten oproepen om achter de waarheid te komen.

Vanaf de eerste bladzijde wordt duidelijk dat muziek, melodieën en zang een grote rol hebben in het verhaal. Shady speel viool in een band met haar twee beste vrienden. Er wordt opgetreden en er wordt geluisterd naar de muziek van andere muzikanten. Ondanks dat de muziek niet daadwerkelijk vanuit het boek te horen is, weet de auteur het belang en de beleving ervan wel goed weer te geven op papier. Wellicht dat een playlist bij dit boek wel van meerwaarde had kunnen zijn, want aangezien er liedjes en artiesten in het boek naar voren komen die daadwerkelijk bestaan, zou de lezer daar wellicht een extra beleving mee kunnen krijgen. De sfeer van rodeo, bluegrass en cowboylaarzen blijft door het hele verhaal voelbaar, van de kledingstijl, de muziek maar ook het taalgebruik. De auteur heeft zich hier goed in verdiept om deze elementen realistisch over te laten komen.

Het fantasy-element van het oproepen van geesten met de viool van Shady’s vader is mooi uitgewerkt, maar heeft absoluut niet de overhand in het verhaal. Want ondanks dat het een belangrijk element is, komt het minder aan bod dan je zou verwachten. Er zijn namelijk geheimen, familieproblemen, vriendschappen en ruzies die veel meer naar voren komen. Het magische element is een mooie toevoeging aan het verhaal om ervoor te zorgen dat er wellicht gerechtigheid plaats kan vinden, maar het heeft niet altijd de overhand in het verhaal. Familiebanden en familiegeheimen komen langzaamaan steeds meer aan het licht en zorgt voor een negatieve en spannende ondertoon in het verhaal. De sfeer leidt hier niet onder, deze geheimen en ontdekkingen maken het juist sterker. Ondanks dat Shady’s familie best wel groot is doordat het opnieuw is samengesteld en er ook genoeg liefdesgeschiedenissen naar boven worden gehaald, voelt het heel realistisch, zeker in samenwerking met de sfeer van het verhaal. Het vergt wel wat toewijding van de lezer om alle personages en hun connecties goed bij te houden en te blijven begrijpen, want met uitzondering van Shady hebben de andere personages best wel veel voorkomende namen, die soms ook nog een beetje op elkaar lijken, waardoor het soms net wat lastiger wordt om ze uit elkaar te kunnen houden. Maar na verloop van tijd went dit en krijgt ieder personage wel een eigen stem en gezicht.

Naarmate Shady dichterbij de waarheid komt, wordt het verhaal steeds spannender. Er vinden een aantal confrontaties plaats die in het bijzijn van Shady en haar jongere zusje niet echt gepast zijn, maar wel echt plaatsvinden. Dit maakt het verhaal niet per se minder geloofwaardig, maar wel angstaanjagender. Op een gegeven moment zijn niet alle personages meer te vertrouwen en wordt het lastig voor Shady om vrienden of familie in vertrouwen te nemen terwijl ze achter de waarheid van haar broers beschuldiging wilt komen.

Dit verhaal bevat een spannende zoektocht naar de waarheid. Als je niemand meer kunt vertrouwen, zullen alleen de geesten kunnen helpen om de waarheid te onthullen.

I can name a few more if you’d like 😉 This book also belongs in that category. Today I’m telling you if the content was just as beautiful.

Description: Shady Grove inherited her father’s ability to call ghosts from the grave with his fiddle, but she also knows the fiddle’s tunes bring nothing but trouble and darkness.
But when her brother is accused of murder, she can’t let the dead keep their secrets.
In order to clear his name, she’s going to have to make those ghosts sing.

From the very first page it becomes quite clear that music, melodies and vocals have a pretty big role in the story. Shady plays the fiddle in a band with her two best friends. They give live performances and also listen to other bands playing. Even though you can’t really hear the music from within the boook, the author knows how to put the importance and experience on paper really well. Maybe a playlist with this book would be a great addition, because there are songs and artists named in this book that really exists. Readers could use this playlist as an extra experience level. The sphere of rodeo, bluegrass and cowboyboots remains throughout the story. From they’re clothingstyle, to the music played and their use of language. The author has thoroughly studied this to make these elements realistic.

The fantasy elements of summoning ghosts with Shady’s farther’s violin is a really nice idea, but it doesn’t prevail in the story. Even though it is an important element in the story, it doesn’t come along quite that often. Instead there are secrets, family problems, friendships and quarrels that are more discussed. The magical element is a nice addition to the story tos eek justice, but it doesn’t always prevail in the story. Family ties and secrets are slowly coming to light and these elements create a negative but exciting undertone in the story. The sphere does not disappear, these secrets and discoveries only make it stronger. Despite the fact that Shady’s family is quite big due to divorces, new relationships and a quite difficult love history, it feels very realistic. it takes a bit of dedication from the reader to keep track and understand all characters and their connections, because with the exception of Shady, the other characters have quite common names, which are also a little alike. This sometimes makes it harder to tell them all apart. But over time you get used tot his and each character gets it’s own face and voice.

As Shady gets closer tot he truth, the tenstion rises and the story gets more and more exciting. There are a few confrontations that are not really appropriate in the presence of Shady and her younger sisters. But while they’re happning it makes the story a little more terrifying. At some point, it feels like there’s no one left to trust. This puts Shady in a difficult position, because she needs her friends and her family to find out the truth of her brother’s accusation.

This story is about an exciting search for the truth. If you can’t trust anyone anymore, there are only the ghosts left to help you to reveal the truth.
