The Court of Miracles – Kester Grant (ENG + NL)

Hee allemaal!

Het voordeel van allerlei e-mails ontvangen van Nederlandse, maar ook buitenlandse uitgeverijen is dat je boeken nieuws snel en overzichtelijk ontvangt, maar soms ook dat je een boek gratis kunt lezen, of al kan lezen vóór de officiële verschijningsdatum. Op dit boek had ik al een hele poos gewacht en ik keek er echt met smacht naar uit. Twee weken voor verschijning ontving ik een email van de uitgeverij met daarin de mogelijkheid om het als e-boek alvast te kunnen lezen. Ik was nog niet ver met lezen in een boek waarin ik net was begonnen, dus die moest nog heel even wachten, maar ik heb het boek toch nog voor het einde van mei uit kunnen lezen. En wauw, wat heeft dit verhaal me verrast.

Beschrijving: In de gevaarlijke stedelijke jungle van een alternatief 1828 Parijs, is de Franse Revolutie mislukt en heeft de stad verdeeld tussen meedogenloze royalty en negen criminele Guilds, beter bekent als The Court of Miracles. Nina Thénardier is een getalenteerde katachtige inbreker en lid van the Thieves Guild. Haar leven bestaat uit nachtelijke overvallen, het vermijden van haar vaders vuisten en waken over haar naïeve geadopteerde zusje Ettie. Wanneer het oog van the Tiger – de meedogenloze Lord van de Guild of Flesh – zijn oog op Ettie laat vallen, probeert Nina er alles aan te doen om het jongere meisje veilig te houden. Haar belofte brengt haar de donkere kant van de stad tot het schitterende court van Louis XVII. Maar het dwingt haar ook om moeilijke keuzes te maken. Of ze kan Ettie beschermen en een wrede oorlog tussen de Guilds ontketenen, of haar zusje voor altijd verliezen aan the Tiger.

Dit verhaal neemt je direct mee naar de straten van Frankrijk vroeg in de 19^de eeuw. Met hier en daar een Frans woord tussendoor wordt de sfeer al direct goed weergeven. Maar ook de neerslachtige en bittere situatie waarin sommigen leven. Nina is nog een jong meisje als het verhaal start en na een ingrijpende gebeurtenis wordt ze voorgesteld aan de Lord of Thieves die haar onder zijn hoede neemt. Vanaf dat moment wordt steeds duidelijker hoe de wereld in The Court of Miracles er nou eigenlijk uit ziet. Niemand op straat is veilig en degenen die bang zijn, zullen niet lang overleven. Er heerst hongersnood en het is heel normaal om lichamen van overledenen op straat tegen te komen. De angst, het geweld en de gevaren voelen levensecht terwijl Nina zich steeds meer op straat begeeft en meer leden van andere Guilds leert kennen. Het duurt niet lang of ze verandert van een angstig jong meisje in een zelfverzekerde jonge vrouw die het heft in eigen handen neemt. Want als de Tiger zijn oog op haar adoptie zusje laat vallen en er alles aan doet om haar in handen te krijgen, moet Nina hem te slim af zijn. Ze moet alle Guild Lords te slim af zijn, de alles overheersende wetten en zelfs zichzelf.

Er vinden door het verhaal heen enkele tijdsprongen plaats, zodat het verhaal zich vooral focust op de belangrijkste en meest interessante gebeurtenissen. Er wordt vanaf het begin af aan voldoende tijd besteed tussendoor om de omgeving te beschrijven, want de wereld van Court of Miracles, de straten van Frankrijk in de 19^de eeuw zijn heel anders dan je je zou voorstellen. Er heerst een depressieve sfeer, er is nauwelijks tijd voor vieringen of vreugde, het gaat voornamelijk om overleven. Terwijl Nina zich verder ontwikkelt, wordt het verhaal ook langzaam wat ingewikkelder. Om Ettie te beschermen komt Nina met veel mensen in contact, ze sluit deals, komt bij anderen in de schuld te staan en anderen ook bij haar. Er vinden magische handelingen plaats die enerzijds behulpzaam zijn, maar anderzijds ook tegenwerkende krachten kunnen bevatten. De wereld wordt groter en er gebeurt steeds meer. Hoe verder het plot zich ontwikkelt hoe spannender het ook allemaal wordt. Het lijkt erop dat Nina op een gegeven moment de touwtjes niet meer allemaal in handen heeft en lijkt het gevaarlijke spel te gaan verliezen. Maar dat is precies wat de auteur wilt dat je denkt. Want er zijn een tal van verrassingen die ondanks dat je vanuit Nina’s personage leest, uit een onverwachte hoek komen en het hele verhaal ineens omgooien. Sommigen plotwendingen lieten me echt versteld staan, dat mijn mond er van open viel.

De wereldopbouw is fenomenaal. De scheiding tussen the Wrechted en de Adel was nog nooit zo groot en zo duidelijk. Alles hierin is goed doordacht, alle Guilds, de wetten die gehandhaafd dienen te worden, de machtige Lords van de Guilds en hun leden. Het klopt allemaal en iedere Guild lijkt een eigen soort wereld te zijn. Als je eenmaal lid bent van een Guild is er geen weg meer terug. Het is één voor allen en allen voor één. Want samen vormen ze The Court of Miracles. Vijanden op straat, maar bondgenoten rond te tafel.

Nina’s personage is sterk, intelligent, angstaanjagend, maar tegelijkertijd ook oh zo kwetsbaar. Haar vermommingen werken op een gegeven moment niet altijd meer, omdat ze een reputatie heeft opgebouwd en steeds meer leden van andere Guilds haar ook beginnen te herkennen. Er zijn verschillende personages die een belangrijke samenwerking met Nina aangaan en hierdoor steeds vaker in beeld komen en een eigen gezicht krijgen. Maar door de hoeveelheid personages lopen sommige gezichten, zeker in de eerste helft nog een beetje in elkaar over. Het vergt enige toewijding van de lezer om hen allemaal te leren kennen en alle ontwikkelingen, veranderingen en plotwendingen te blijven begrijpen. Maar zodra het tempo in het verhaal weer omhoog gaat wordt het lastig om het boek weg te leggen. De aanloop naar het einde wordt spannender en interessanter, tot Nina eindelijk de kans grijpt om een einde te brengen aan alle ellende.

The Court of Miracles is niet zomaar een hervertelling van Lès Miserables is. Armoede, miserie en angst gaan gepaard met actie, familiebanden en intriges. Prachtig uitgewerkt tot een aangrijpend en bovenal zenuwslopend verhaal.

The great advantage of receiving e-mails from different publishers is getting news about new books soon and clearly. But sometimes it also provides free reads or reading a book before it’s official publication date. I had been waiting for this book for a long time and I was looking forward to it so much! Two weeks before it’s publication I received an email from the publisher with the opportunity to download the e-book beforehand. I just started in another book, so it had to wait for a few more days, but I managed to read it before it’s official publication date. And wow, did this book surpirse me!

This story immediately takes you to the streets of France in the early 19th century. With a few French words in between, it develops an atmosphere instantly. But the dejected and bitter situation in which some live becomes clear quite soon. Nina is still a young girl when the story starts and after a major event she is introduced tot he Lord of Thieves who decides to take her under his wings. From that moment on it becomes clear what the world actually looks like in the Court of Miracles. No one is safe in the streets and those who are afraid will not survive very long. There is a great famine and it doesn’t shake anyone when there are corpses lying on the street. The fear, violence and dangers feel very real while Nina goes out on the streets and gets to know members of other Guilds. It doesn’t take long before she changes from a frightened young girl into a confident young woman who takes matters into her own hands. When the Tiger has set his eyes on Nina’s adoptive sister and won’t stop until he has her, Nina has to outsmart him. She must outsmart all Guild Lords, all laws and even herself.

There are several time jumps throughout the story. That’s how the story focuses mainly on the most important and interesting events. There’s enough time spent in the beginning to describe the surroundings, because the world of the Court of Miracles, the streets of France in the 19th centruy, are very different from what you’d imagine. There is kind of a depressing ambiance, hardly any time for celebrations or joy, it is mainly about survival. As Nina continues her personal development, the level of complication in the story increases. To protect Ettie, Nina gets in contact with many people, she makes deals, is in dept to others and others to her. There are a few moments in which magic will appear, which sometimes comes in handy. But in other times the magic works against her. The world is getting bigger and a lot more happens. The further the plot develops, the more exciting it all becomes. It seems that at some point Nina is no longer in control and on her way to lose the dangerous games she’s playing. But that’s exactly what the author wants us to think. She adds more exciting and surprising happenings which sometimes suddenly change the whole story.

De worldbuilding is phenomenal. The separations between the Wretched and the nobility has never been so great nor so clear. Everything is well thought through, all the Guilds, the laws, the mightly Lords of the Guilds and it’s members. It just fits and every Guild seems to be it a small world on it’s own. Once you are a member of a Guild, there’s no turning back. It is one for all and all for one. As for together they are The Court of Miracles. They’re enemies on the streets but allies around the table.

Nina is a strong character, she’s also intelligent and somehow terrifying, but yet oh so fragile at the same time. At some point, her disguises lose their strenght as she’s built up a reputation and more members of other Guilds are starting to recognize her as well. There are several characters introduced while they start an important collaboration with Nina. This slowly makes them more important. But due to the amount of different characters, you might mix up some of them in the first half of the story. It takes some commitment from the reader to get to know them all. Also to understand all the changes and plot twists. But when the tempo rises again, it becomes much more difficult to put the book aside. As the end is getting closer the excitement rises until Nina finally tries to take the opportunity to end all misery. Or so she thinks.

The Court of Miracles isn’t just a retelling of Lès Miserables. Poverty, misery and fear are accompanied by action, familiy ties and intrigue. Beautifully written words and events become a gripping and above all nerve-wracking story.
